Wow...not since del.icio.us was acquired by Yahoo! has the blogosphere been so universally caught up in a story that, arguably, no one outside the blogosphere cares about. For those of you who haven't heard (meaning Ponderings is probably one of the only blogs you read), Amanda Congdon and Andrew Baron have broken off their partnership at Rocketboom.
I admittedly find Rocketboom entertaining, but the amount of coverage of this little soap opera borders on the ridiculous. "But Woodrow, aren't you the pot calling the kettle black writing this very blog post you ask?" Fair enough, but at least allow me to leave you with a slightly different observation on this whole situation.
Here's the real reason the blogosphere is abuzz about Rocketboom's soap opera. Lots of people won't admit this, but at the end of the day, Amanda comes across as an attractive, approachable woman who loves technology. In other words, she's the fantasy girl every tech geekboy (myself included) used to dream about before we had the confidence to ask someone like that out. I don't want to begrudge Amanda's media presence or talent; she's got great comedic timing. But don't think for a second her appeal isn't partially related to how she looks and how rare that is in the tech world/blogosphere we occupy.
